We’re pleased to showcase artist Robert Carter’s photos of late 60s…early 70s drag races in England. Most of these photos are shown here for the first time in forty years.
After hounding Robert for what seemed like decades, these negatives are now sitting here on my desk. If photographs can exude charisma…these snapshots are overflowing with an almost sinister attitude.
With Robert’s blessing, we’re now selling high-quality reprints of these “lost” photos in our online store.
Win a Robert Carter ‘CC 204 Dragster’ Photograph. Contest ends on March 31st.
Interview with Robert Carter on the story behind his brash and brilliant drag racing photos. Aside from my not-made-for-radio voice, a good listen.

The spark that started it all, a portion of the interview we did last year with Robert.:
How did you get into shooting drag races?
I was lucky, a mate of mine was a writer for Time Out magazine in London, and he lent me his press pass, and I showed up and said that Time Out are interested in doing something on the drag strip. It was early days for them so they thought they were going to get published and get some articles out of it. So they just let me on, and I was right there on the start line and photographing all these old bikes and cars as they took off. But that was kind of a hobby for me, I’d go home and convert me mum and dad’s bathroom into a dark room and just flat-out print. I’m just lucky that my sister saved the negatives for me.
